Ritchie Bros.·Westchester, USA
Apply on Ritchie Bros.

RB Global is hiring a Staff Design System Lead to set strategy and advance an existing MUI (Material UI) and React design system. The role is hands-on and works at the intersection of design and engineering, partnering closely with front-end engineers and product designers. Responsibilities include owning the system end-to-end, defining roadmap and governance, maintaining Figma artifacts synced with production, and connecting the design system to AI tools like Claude. The leader will also be responsible for intake, triage, and prioritization of design system requests and ensuring accessibility (WCAG) is treated as a default.

AI skillsThis role asks for AI & agentic skills, exactly what we teach at Into Design Systems

What you'll do

  • Define the multi-year vision and roadmap for the design system, translating business and product priorities
  • Lead foundations, components, patterns, tokens, and documentation as a single, coherent system building on the existing MUI/React foundation
  • Partner with product designers to gather input and continuously evolve components and guidelines based on feedback
  • Maintain a Figma component library (variants, auto layout, variables/tokens) that stays tightly synced with the MUI/React implementation in production
  • Theme, extend, and override MUI's components and patterns so the system reads as distinctly RB
  • Establish a token structure that supports theming, scale, and long-term consistency
  • Bring a high bar for visual polish, detail, and motion
  • Develop and maintain an illustration style, icon system, and imagery guidelines

What they're looking for

  • 9+ years in product design, including significant time setting strategy for and maturing a design system at a product company
  • Hands-on experience with MUI (Material UI) and React-based component libraries, comfortable theming, extending, and overriding MUI defaults
  • A portfolio demonstrating systems thinking: token architecture, component libraries, documentation, and real adoption across multiple teams
  • Deep fluency in Figma (variables, component variants, auto layout) and familiarity with design-to-code workflows (e.g., Code Connect, Storybook)
  • Strong visual craft in typography, layout, color, and motion
  • Real, hands-on experience partnering with engineering on component architecture, technical constraints, and implementation trade-offs
  • Experience running an intake and prioritization process for a shared platform or system, balancing competing requests against roadmap and capacity
  • A track record of distilling input from many designers and stakeholders into coherent, scalable decisions and influencing without formal authority
