Principal Design Systems Designer

Ethos Life·Remote
Apply on Ethos Life

Ethos, a life insurance technology company, is hiring its first Principal Design Systems Designer to build the foundations that let designers, PMs and engineers reliably ship on-brand, accessible, high-quality UI. It is a true 0 to 1 role, built AI-native from the start, connecting Figma, Cursor / Claude Code and Storybook into one pipeline with human checkpoints. Remote in the US.

AI skillsThis role asks for AI & agentic skills, exactly what we teach at Into Design Systems

What you'll do

  • Audit the current product UI and design artifacts and identify the highest-leverage opportunities to standardize and reduce inconsistency
  • Define the information architecture of the system (naming, taxonomy, component hierarchy, documentation) so both humans and AI agents can find and apply the right primitives
  • Define and ship a scalable token strategy (color, typography, spacing, elevation, motion) that keeps Figma variables, code tokens and Storybook in sync
  • Partner with front-end engineers to translate the system into reusable components with clear APIs, states and built-in accessibility
  • Own the component lifecycle end-to-end: versioning, release notes, deprecations and handoffs
  • Build a lightweight, builder-friendly contribution process and documentation that people and agents actually use

What they're looking for

  • Owned a design system end-to-end (0 to 1 or through a major overhaul) at a product company, including driving organizational adoption
  • Hands-on experience building a token pipeline that keeps Figma variables, code tokens and a component library (e.g. Storybook) in sync
  • Set accessibility standards and shipped accessible components based on WCAG guidelines
  • Personally used AI-assisted design/development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code or GitHub Copilot
