Design Systems Lead
Apply on RampRamp is hiring a Design Systems Lead to build design judgment into the foundations of Ramp so designers, engineers, and agents can produce coherent, usable experiences. The role involves leading and developing the design systems team, owning the system vision and technical architecture, and staying hands-on by building prototypes and working in code. The posting emphasizes raising visual and interaction quality, using AI in the design workflow, and improving how ideas become shipped experiences.
AI skillsThis role asks for AI & agentic skills, exactly what we teach at Into Design SystemsWhat you'll do
- Lead and develop the design systems team: set priorities, ownership, and goals; give direct, timely feedback; hold people accountable.
- Own the system’s vision and direction; decide what to preserve, evolve, simplify, or replace and turn that direction into focused work the team can deliver.
- Elevate Ramp’s visual and interaction design, including typography, hierarchy, density, motion, responsive behavior, accessibility, and states beyond the happy path.
- Translate design principles into reusable patterns, reference experiences, composition rules, and guidance that people and agents can use without a designer present.
- Guide technical architecture with engineering across components, tokens, agent discovery of guidance, interface composition, and checks; balance flexibility, coherence, performance, and ease of use.
- Stay hands-on: build prototypes, work in code, and engage with implementation details to test ideas, unblock the team, and find system failures.
- Define and measure quality by building repeatable evaluations grounded in real tasks and measuring whether builders can ship better work faster with less rework.
- Improve the path from idea to shipped experience by partnering with engineering and AI teams on workflows that support exploration, iteration, and production safeguards.
What they're looking for
- Experience leading and developing strong design or design engineering teams with a track record of setting direction and delivering meaningful outcomes.
- Exceptional visual and interaction design skills with a clear point of view, attention to detail, and the ability to make complex experiences feel simple.
- Deep systems thinking and experience building systems that other teams adopt, with evidence of improving speed and quality of shipped work.
- Strong technical fluency: ability to prototype and build in code, understand front-end architecture, and work through implementation tradeoffs with engineers.
- Active, hands-on use of AI in design and building workflows, with understanding of where it helps, where it fails, and how to improve its output.
- Experience turning design principles into practical guidance, reusable patterns, and quality checks that work at scale.
- Strong product judgment and a habit of staying close to people using what you build, connecting system decisions to real workflows and customer outcomes.
- Ability to create clarity in ambiguity, make decisions, give difficult feedback, and maintain momentum without losing the quality bar.
