Design System Engineer

The role works with the Design Systems lead and product designers to define, build, document, and maintain design system components. PermitFlow is headquartered in New York City with a hybrid schedule of 3 in-office days per week, and prefers NYC-based candidates or those open to relocation.
What you'll do
- Own day-to-day development and evolution of PermitFlow's React component library
- Build and maintain components across atoms, molecules, organisms, and templates
- Ensure components are robust, accessible, and documented in Storybook
- Define and enforce component standards including API contracts, design token usage, prop interfaces, and variant patterns
- Review PRs into the component library
- Partner with designers using Figma to translate design specs into production-grade components
- Manage the component library roadmap
- Balance new component development with migration work

- Strong React and TypeScript fundamentals
- Demonstrated experience building and maintaining a production design system or component library
- Portfolio, GitHub profile, or Storybook instance to share
- Sharp eye for visual and interaction design
- Experience working closely with product designers
- Ability to give and receive feedback on specs, negotiate tradeoffs, and align on abstractions before build
- Familiarity with Figma
- Familiarity with Storybook, Chromatic, or equivalent developer experience tooling
