Sr. Product Designer II - Design Systems
Apply on InstacartInstacart's Design Systems & Foundations team builds the shared components, tokens and guidance behind its customer, shopper, retailer and internal tools. The role leads the evolution of the design system as a product, raising quality, scalability and adoption across surfaces, working with an 8-person foundations team plus engineering and design technologists on design-to-code fidelity and a source of truth that can power automation and AI-assisted workflows. Instacart is a Flex First team, so employees choose where they work.
AI skillsThis role asks for AI & agentic skills, exactly what we teach at Into Design SystemsWhat you'll do
- Own the design system roadmap, prioritizing by product needs, system health and adoption friction, and align stakeholders on the vision
- Define and evolve system UX: components, patterns, interaction states, responsive behavior, motion and accessibility defaults across products and platforms
- Lead token strategy end to end (primitive and semantic), including theming, density and extensibility, and keep component APIs consistent with engineering
- Establish governance and lifecycle management: contribution standards, quality bars, reviews, versioning, deprecations and migration plans
- Write implementation-aware specs with edge cases, constraints, usage guidance and acceptance criteria, working in component-based workflows such as Figma libraries and Storybook
- Build design enablement in context (linting rules, templates, plugin experiences) backed by a structured knowledge model that powers automation and AI-assisted support
- Use AI tools for audits, consistency checks, migrations and spec generation, and contribute to AI-assisted workflows that help teams adopt changes safely
- Measure adoption and impact, find workflow friction and run enablement programs that reduce rework and speed up safe system evolution
What they're looking for
- 6+ years in product design or equivalent, including shipping and maintaining a design system adopted by multiple product teams
- Portfolio (link required) showing design systems mastery across components, patterns, tokens, governance and cross-platform consistency
- Technical fluency in component-based workflows such as Figma component libraries and Storybook, with an understanding of how implementation constraints shape UX
- Hands-on experience with token pipelines and tooling such as CSS variables and semantic token architectures, plus implementation-aware specs with acceptance criteria
- Accessibility competency applied to systems (WCAG 2.1 AA) with accessible defaults and patterns
- Demonstrated use of AI and automation to improve design system delivery, e.g. audits, migration planning, consistency checks, spec generation
- Experience driving adoption through metrics, deprecation and migration programs and cross-functional enablement
- Bachelor's degree in Design, HCI or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
