Senior Product Designer, AI

GitLab·Remote
Apply on GitLab

GitLab is hiring a Senior Product Designer on the AI Product Design team to help build the next generation of intelligent software development experiences. The role involves owning end-to-end design from early exploration through polished, shipped experiences, designing interfaces for AI agents and chat experiences for developers, and establishing design patterns as product and technology evolve. Example projects include Duo Workflow (AI agents across the SDLC), Duo Chat (AI-powered DevSecOps assistant), and AI-powered code suggestions and review tools.

AI skillsThis role asks for AI & agentic skills, exactly what we teach at Into Design Systems

What you'll do

  • Drive end-to-end design across GitLab's AI suite, from early exploration to polished execution, creating flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs and deciding when AI is the appropriate solution.
  • Break complex AI experiences into releases that fit GitLab's cadence, define success criteria upfront, use evidence to drive decisions, and work closely with PM, Engineering, and Technical Writing to deliver work.
  • Set and raise quality standards through strong visual and interaction design and provide constructive feedback.
  • Bring validated user evidence and a strong point of view to roadmap discussions; use journey maps, storyboards, and design explorations to connect short-term work to longer-term vision.
  • Help designers across the product apply AI capabilities, contribute AI-specific patterns to the Pajamas Design System, and share knowledge to raise AI design quality across GitLab.
  • Mentor and guide other designers, participate in hiring by interviewing candidates and evaluating portfolios.

What they're looking for

  • A strong portfolio showing how you think and iterate (not just what shipped), ideally including AI/ML products, agentic workflows, or natural language interfaces where user control, transparency, and trust were key considerations.
  • Experience designing for AI workflows and understanding the unique challenges of multi-step, agentic, or automated processes.
  • A high bar for craft, with attention to interaction and visual design and helping others raise their standards.
  • Experience conducting research and translating findings into clear, well-reasoned design decisions.
  • Proven ability to work iteratively in agile product development, balancing speed with quality and making tradeoffs without losing sight of longer-term vision.
  • Experience designing in complex enterprise contexts, with working knowledge of Git, HTML/CSS, accessibility best practices, and design systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, including simplifying complexity and articulating design rationale clearly.
