Babbel Labs, an AI-first independent company within the Babbel group based in Berlin, is seeking an experienced product designer for hands-on design leadership. The role focuses on shaping product direction, running discovery, and delivering work for AI-first language learning experiences. This is a design leadership and mentoring role (not people management) on a small, fast-moving team that works AI-first. The role is hybrid, combining time in the office and remote work.

What you'll do

  • Lead design across discovery and delivery and own key design decisions for AI-first language learning experiences
  • Design AI-powered learning experiences, shaping learner interactions from conversation and voice to feedback that remains clear and trustworthy when the AI is wrong
  • Work as an AI builder, using AI tools first to speed research, explore ideas, prototype and deliver
  • Prototype in code using SwiftUI and HTML to test ideas and produce vision prototypes ready to hand off
  • Design with Claude Code and Figma together, with Figma as one tool among several
  • Coach and mentor the small, experienced design team and help them share a set of AI-first design principles
  • Work across disciplines with engineers, product managers, linguists and language learning specialists
  • Shape the product's direction, run discovery, get work delivered, and set the pace for speed, precision and quality

  • Proven design leadership with a record of shipping work that users adopted
  • Excellent UI craft and motion design
  • Hands-on prototyping in code, comfortable in SwiftUI and HTML/CSS/JS
  • AI fluency, using AI tools like Claude Code as a real part of design
  • Working knowledge of design systems
  • Experience coaching designers and raising a team's standards through example, feedback and shared practices
  • Clear communication with technical and non-technical partners including specialists like linguists and learning designers
  • Comfort with ambiguity and fast iteration
